Description: A family of vines or lianas with tendrils and alternate leaves that can be simple, palmately lobed, or palmately compound, with stipules. Vitaceae can be instantly recognized by the placement of the tendrils: strictly opposite the leaves (180°). In this region, most of the Vitaceae are weedy vines or small lianas of secondary forest. At La Selva Biological Station, they are particularly common along the Sendero Arriera-Zompopa, and in the highly disturbed regenerating forest west of the Lindero El Peje.

Economic uses: In the temperate zone, Vitis vinifera is widely cultivated for edible fruit and winemaking. Some of the tropical species have similar large, sweet fruits, but they have never been cultivated.


Descripción: Una familia de bejucos con zarcillos y hojas alternas que pueden ser simples, palmatilobulados, o palmaticompuestas, con estípulas. Esta familia es inconfundible debido a la posición del zarcillo: sale del tallo directamente al otro lado de la hoja (180°). En esta zona, la mayoría de las Vitaceas son bejucos herbáceos o leñosos del bosque secundario o de áreas perturbadas. En la Estación Biológica La Selva, son muy comunes cerca del Sendero Arriera-Zompopa, y en el bosque secundario en pastos abandonados al oeste del Lindero El Peje.

Usos económicos: En la zona templada, se cultiva Vitis vinifera como fruto comestible y para hacer vino. Algunas especies tropicales tienen frutos similares, dulces y carnosos, pero actualmente no se cultivan.
