Basal Asterids

There are no reliable characters to unite these taxa, probably because they do not constitute a monophyletic group (i.e., they are a group that does not include all the descendents of a common ancestor). The families within the basal Asterids have a number of good identifying characters, though. Many of these families are more prevalent in cloud forests. The important lowland forest taxa include Lecythidaceae, Myrsinaceae, and Sapotaceae.

Sin embargo, las familias en este grupo tienen muchas características distintivas. Muchas familias incluídas este grupo son más comunes en el bosque nuboso.
