This guide covers sixty of the most prevalent families of angiosperms (seed-bearing plants) in the lowland rainforest of Costa Rica’s Zona Norte. The easiest way to use this guide is to refer to the keys (p. 10). The index (p. 156) allows quick location of a particular group. The text is organized according to the most current scientific classification of the families. Table 1 shows the traditional classification into orders and families, and Fig. 2 shows the evolutionary relationships among these groups. The families in this guide come from a wide variety of phylogenetic backgrounds (Fig. 2), and the order in the text is roughly analogous to where the groups appear on the phylogeny. Because tropical plant taxonomy is still in flux, these descriptions should be treated as provisional.
In the family descriptions, I have provided a representative illustration for each group and a brief account of the genera found at La Selva Biological Station. The exact numbers of genera and species will vary in other parts of this region, but these lists should be a helpful starting point for identifying plants. For each illustration, I have included the full scientific name of the plant described and the name of the authority (i.e., the taxonomist who originally described the species). If the name of a species changes, this will make it easier to track down the new name.
Este guía describe sesenta de las familias más comunes de angiospermas (plantas que traen semillas) presentes en el bosque lluvioso de la Zona Norte de Costa Rica. Para usar esta guía, es más fácil empezar con las claves diagnósticas (p. 13). El índice (p. 156) le permitirá ubicar rápidamente un grupo específico. El texto se organiza según la clasificación científica de las familias. La Tabla 1 muestra la clasificación tradicional de órdenes y familias. La Figura 2 muestra las relaciones evolutivas entre los grupos. Las familias en este guía están presentes en varias partes del árbol filogenético (Fig. 2). El orden de los grupos en el texto sigue aproximadamente su orden en el árbol filogenético. La taxonomía de plantas tropicales todavía puede cambiar. Por lo tanto, las descripciones de familias en este guía son provisionales.
La descripción de cada familia está acompañada por el dibujo de una especie representativa y una lista de los géneros que aparecen en la Estación Biológica La Selva. Los géneros y las especies varían en otras partes de la Zona Norte, pero esas listas serán útiles para empezar a identificar una planta desconocida. Con cada dibujo, he incluido el nombre científico de la planta y el nombre del autor (el taxonomista que originalmente describió la especie). Si el nombre de la familia o del género cambia, con ésta información será más fácil encontrar el nombre nuevo.
